Un diputado conservador británico, David Amess, fue apuñalado “múltiples veces” el viernes durante un evento en su circunscripción en Leigh-on-Sea, en el sureste de Inglaterra, informaron la policía y medios británicos.

“Un hombre fue detenido (...) y no buscamos a nadie más”, anunció la policía local en Twitter.

Los canales Sky News y BBC identificaron a la víctima como el político de 69 años, miembro del partido del primer ministro Boris Johnson.

Un testigo identificado solo como Anthony describió a la radio LBC el gran despliegue policial en el lugar.

“Vi cómo sacaban a alguien del edificio y lo metían en la parte trasera de un coche de policía”, dijo, “aparentemente (el diputado) fue apuñalado varias veces”.

Las reacciones políticas no se hicieron esperar, en un país marcado por el asesinato en plena calle en 2016 de la diputada eurófila Jo Cox, una semana antes del referéndum del Brexit, a manos de un simpatizante neonazi.

“Noticias horribles y profundamente impactantes”, tuiteó el líder de la oposición laborista, Keir Starmer.

Por su parte, el ex primer ministro conservador británico David Cameron lamentó estas “noticias alarmantes y preocupantes”.

Johnson, su partido y su gobierno no reaccionaron todavía.
